Making an Impact with Deloitte
On a bright and bustling Friday, about 30 Deloitte professionals gathered at Cascades Public Library to volunteer with Station Stitchers. This marks the third year Deloitte has partnered with Station Stitchers, and the energy and enthusiasm were palpable from the start.
Making an Impact, One Quilt at a Time
Station Stitchers, based in Purcellville, Virginia, has donated over 5,000 quilts to hospitals, shelters, and care centers since our founding. Our mission is simple yet powerful: to wrap our community in kindness, one quilt at a time. Volunteers are the beating heart of this mission—each pair of hands, whether experienced or brand new, plays a crucial role in organizing, cutting, ironing, sewing, and assembling the quilts.
This Impact Day was more than just a day of service; it was a day of transformation. Many Deloitte volunteers arrived not knowing what a quilt even looked like, let alone how to sew. Some planned only to sort or cut fabric, unsure if they could contribute beyond that. But as the hours passed, something magical happened. With encouragement, laughter, and a willingness to try, volunteers pushed past their comfort zones. They learned how to thread needles, guide fabric under humming machines, and piece together vibrant patterns. By the end of the day, those same volunteers who started as novices were proudly finishing beautiful quilts—each stitch a testament to newfound skills and shared purpose.
Voices from the Day
The room was filled with laughter, learning, and a deep sense of connection. Steph Watson, Marketing Manager, captured the spirit:
“This is the most fun at work I’ve had all year.”
For many, the experience was about more than just giving back—it was about forging bonds and making memories. Berk Gundogdu and Yousr Ali, both Lead Talent Acquisition Specialists, shared:
“It’s nice to make an impact with people who you work with—plus nice to see each other in real life.”
For others, it was a journey into the unknown. Tara Stamper, Lead Sourcer, reflected:
“I’ve never sewn before and find this to be very meditative and happy to make an impact and making quilts for the underserved.”
Susie Yu, another Lead Sourcer, expressed her excitement:
“I am so excited to be a part of this wonderful organization and make an impact in a space that I am very passionate about.”
Elaine Lichtman, Marketing Manager, added:
“It’s been really amazing getting to weave (pun intended) multiple passions together at once, all while supporting the community.”
Cassiah Rasmussen, Project Co-Lead, highlighted the transformation she witnessed:
“This event is the highlight of my year. I love seeing volunteers coming in wide-eyed and cautious, believing that the sparkle in their eye and the joy of a new skill learned.”
Station Stitchers volunteer Jamie Hoybach summed it up beautifully:
“It’s wonderful teaching new sewists and watching the magic of this whole experience.”
A Lasting Partnership
Our ongoing collaboration with Deloitte is a testament to the power of community partnerships. Through Impact Day and beyond, Deloitte professionals are helping us make a tangible difference—one quilt, one act of kindness at a time. The impact is felt not only by those who will receive these quilts, but also by every volunteer who leaves with new skills, new friends, and a renewed sense of purpose.
